If you have watched the 2007 video-game related documentary, The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters, then I bet you know who Billy Mitchell is. If you haven’t, then I suggest that you do. He’s the guy with the long hair, scraggy beard, and the necktie. To make things even easier for you, he’s the pompous ass who think he’s all high and mighty. Not hard to miss.
Anyways, the documentary left everyone with the impression that Billy Mitchell was all talk. Especially when he refused to play in public. It was obvious at that time that he was afraid of losing his face from those who respect him. The documentary ended with Steve Wiebe getting the world record and everybody was happy to see the underdog finally win.
But it seems there’s a sequel to the tale as recently, Billy Mitchell resurfaces and retakes the world records for Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr. live at the inaugural ceremony of the International Video Game Hall of Fame in Ottumwa , Iowa. He ended up with 2 hours 42 minutes for Donkey Kong with a score of 1,062,800 and 3 hours 58 minutes for Donkey Kong Jr. with 1,270,900, thus making him the king of kong once again.
As soon as Mitchell got the high score, he simply just stopped playing and allowed his character to die. When asked why, Mitchell said: “Some say I’m being cocky. Some say I’m being lazy. I say, I’m being Billy Mitchell.”

Before, I kinda had this hatred towards Mitchell especially after watching the movie. I mean, who wouldn’t just look at him! But I found out that I’m being kind of unfair. I haven’t met the guy and my only conception of his personality is from the documentary. But after seeing footages and reading interviews of him, as well as this recent record-breaking win live in public, I guess he’s really not that bad of a guy after all and might be as good as people say he is.
I guess a congratulations is in order, eh?
Hates how he has been manipulated ~ Pol
