Christmas photo cards

For obvious reasons, I am beginning to miss my ex-girlfriend when I chanced upon the tons of pictures inconspicuously far hidden in my closet and I can’t help but to think of her again.  It’s been a year that we have lost communication when we agreed to “cool off” because of the long distance love affair.  She flew to visit her parents in the Middle East , then eventually she was able to secure a nursing job there and did not come back as planned.  I thought I can handle the set up but I was wrong.

Now, that Christmas is getting near, her memories keep haunting me especially when I recollect that holiday season would bring out her creativity in making Christmas photo cards and sending them to all our common friends and all her loved ones.  But of course, the very first photocard she cleverly and patiently crafted was given to me.   And right now, I am holding the said card admiring our beautiful picture together and yes, wishing I can see her again.

Christmas is the season to share and give love…

Honorable mention

Mom e-mailed me the other day that my Dad is into photography these days… in fact, he bought a D90 DSLR camera to start with and had attended Photography workshop.  Serious huh!   Well, he is into something interesting again and knowing my dad, he will pour his hearts and mind into what he is up to.   Truly, though he is a novice in this field… there is no doubt that he took by heart the lessons and tips offered in the workshop.  Along with my Mom, they’ve attended 2 consecutive weeks of training and were given assignments to submit photos taken applying the essential elements of photography.

Well, he was mighty proud that his project was chosen to be among the top 10 best shots despite him being a beginner.  His entry is posted below….. and my Mom’s too…

Mom said she used her Point & shoot camera to take this pic…

Nice shots Mom and Dad… keep it up….

Dad found another hobby

It is an unlikely news I received from my mom that my dad has found a new hobby- that is photography!  According to her, he bought a new DSLR D90 Nikon camera out of his Performance bonus from the company.  It is not surprising for my dad to received bonuses because he is efficient.  I have to salute his boss for that… he has an eye for hardworking and dedicated employees.  After all, my dad has been with his company for more than 2 decades already and he can do his work even with his eyes closed….

Intrigued why dad opted to buy that camera, I did my little research and this I’ve found out about DSLR.   Thought of sharing this find with you, you might get interested to get one too for yourself.   This is what Wiki says about DSLR:

Most digital single-lens reflex cameras (digital SLR or DSLR) are digital cameras that use a mechanical mirror system andpentaprism to direct light from the lens to an optical viewfinder on the back of the camera.

The basic operation of a DSLR is as follows: for viewing purposes, the mirror reflects the light coming through the attached lens upwards at a 90 degree angle. It is then reflected three times by the roof pentaprism, rectifying it for the photographer’s eye. (Note that the diagram below incorrectly shows a non-roof pentaprism.) During exposure, the mirror assembly swings upward, the aperture narrows (if stopped down, or set smaller than wide open), and a shutter opens, allowing the lens to project light onto the image sensor. A second shutter then covers the sensor, ending the exposure, and the mirror lowers while the shutter resets. The period that the mirror is flipped up is referred to as “viewfinder blackout”. A fast-acting mirror and shutter is preferred so as not to delay an action photo.

All of this happens automatically over a period of milliseconds, with cameras designed to do this 3–10 times per second.

DSLRs are often preferred by professional still photographers because they allow an accurate preview of framing close to the moment of exposure, and because DSLRs allow the user to choose from a variety of interchangeable lenses. Most DSLRs also have a function that allows accurate preview of depth of field.

Many professionals also prefer DSLRs for their larger sensors compared to most compact digitals. DSLRs have sensors which are generally closer in size to the traditional film formats that many current professionals started out using. These large sensors allow for similar depths of field and picture angle to film formats, as well as their comparatively high signal to noise ratio.

The term DSLR generally refers to cameras that resemble 35 mm format cameras, although some medium format cameras are technically DSLRs.

his new camera…

Seems complicated but I am happy that he found another new hobby- that is photography…
