Pandora beads

Since my mom already had a considerable collection of gold jewelries, set of diamonds to rave about, amethyst birthstones, pearls… whoah.. what more can she ask for?  She had it all to a  modest standard.   In fairness, my mom spends only for luxurious items if she has money to spare.   She is not mindlessly wasting money on things she don’t actually need.  Most are gifts from my dad on countless occasions and last Sunday, Mother’s day she received a set of diamond necklace and earrings to match.

I can’ really compete with my Dad when it comes to gift giving but I can be at par with him if creativity and practicality will the name of the game.   I’ve chosen to give my mom beautifully crafted pandora beads as Mother’s day presents.  My mom is known for clever accessorizing and my gifts are the best I can give her. I had it daintily wrapped in a box with pink ribbons and I lavishly blew kisses into the box before I sealed it  full of love.

I’ve learned this from her “ The great art of giving is that the gift should cost very little and yet be greatly coveted, so that it may be the more highly appreciated”.

A fake pearl spotter

I am now in a big dilemma of what to give mom on Mother’s Day.  I must say that dad already “ruined” my plans of  buying  pearls as gift for my precious mom.  I saw her new post showing off her pearls and goodness, it is the same pearl watch I’ve been meaning to buy for her.  Since she already had the watch, I will opt for the necklace instead.

When I did some research about pearls, I’ve read not to give or accept pearls as a gift because it will bring bad luck but I really not sold to the idea.  But on the other hand, it will not hurt me if I will follow the belief  that to break the curse, ask for a small money in exchange for the pearls to make it appear that it is a transaction deal.

I really wanted to buy the necklace for her but I have to consult somebody who knows how to spot real pearls.   I don’t know if this really works but when I accompanied a girl friend one time shopping for pearls, I remember seeing her  biting (or rubbing) it across her teeth and curiously I asked her why, she said that if it’s real it will feel rough or there is some kind of “grit” in the rubbing and the fake ones will feel smooth and silky.  She also rubbed two pearls together.  After passing the teeth and rubbing test, she finally purchased them.

I wanted Mom to be  as proud displaying her pearls, confident that she is wearing the real ones.  I will not disappoint her so, I will seek out my friend Jane next week so that I will have a trusted fake pearl spotter.

Mom’s jewels

Countless of times did I hear mom bragged to her friends that we, her children are her only treasures!   We are her shining jewels!  I have high praises for her for keeping us grounded and taught to good spirited and humble children of hers.   I love to talk about my mom and I have written mostly about her because she is an inspiration.. not because I was referred to as “mama’s boy”.

My mom is simple but with good fashion sense.   Her indulgences (aside from food- peace Mom!) are watches and gold jewelries.  Her treasure box yielded gold which she collected as investment.  She, along with our dad are overseas workers in Saudi Arabia for more than 2 decades.  The place boast of largest oil reserves and the world’s second largest oil exporter and gold reserves too.

I know that it will serve her well when emergency arise (heaven forbids). It will peg high value  when pawned…lol.

Triton wedding bands

Weddings are such happy occasion and yet oftentimes there are hardly no dry eyes  during the ceremony.  Tears of joy as they call it. I’ve been to 3 weddings this month and and I’ve  noticed that these days couples opted modern weddings with unexpected twist.  It veers away from the traditional ones.  I’ve seen dancing wedding entourage, couple and guest wearing Converse shoes with their  bridal and formal attires and noticeably lots of modern touch incorporated in the wedding preparation.

A classmate and good friend asked me  not only to be part of the secondary sponsors entourage , but I also took part with the tedious wedding preparation.   The groom chose triton wedding bands for a change. Nobody from both parties objected because the rings are perfect for the couple. In fact, it is worthy of recommendation to whoever wants to be different.

Better safe than sorry…

There goes my best friend Paul in his crisp and elegant gentleman suit as he arrived at the church beaming with pride and happiness because it’s his wedding day!   And as I stood as best man in the  grandiose wedding of Paul and Lyn, my mind wandered far during the time when I had witnessed how frustrated  and inconsolable Paul was when the diamond studded engagement ring  he will offer to Lyn got lost.   Unfortunately, his condo unit while he was away on a business trip to Thailand  was ransacked and all his precious belongings including the ring were all gone.  He was wailing like a small child and who wouldn’t for he took double jobs and sidelines plus overtime and call time just to buy that beautiful ring befitting his ladylove!

It was a painful lesson learned for him… only if he heed the advice of his Uncle Tom to get an engagement ring insurance for protection and peace of mind considering he purchased it, way, way ahead before their wedding day.   So, when the ring was lost to burglary… he almost banged himself on his condo wall…

That unhappy incident was outweighed with happiness as the couple did the traditional exchange of rings after their wedding vows has been said.

Ah…. love!

At my wits’ end….

Yesterday, I hesitantly accompanied cousin Lissie to shop for a perfect debut  gift.   Although, I believe it is a girl thing but my aunt Cherry asked me to keep watch of her daughter so I obliged to go.   Knowing this cousin of mine who loves to hop from one store to the other and would shop aimlessly, the thought almost made me changed my mind.

However, I’ve learned that Aunt Cherry already instructed her to just go to her favorite jeweller and look for a nice bracelet or necklace befitting a debutante.   For hours, she seemingly cant make up her mind which to choose and out of my impatience, I told her that I will check on some gadgets on a nearby electronics shop and that she takes her time.   I allowed her to choose and choose and choose….

Not long after I was gone, I saw her coming towards me and was beckoning me to see what she purchased.   My jaw almost dropped out of surprise… as I fumbled to check what’s inside, I saw only a  empty black  necklace display and I got worried that necklace must has been lost.

Cousin almost send me to my wits’ end for it took her several hours looking for a gift and that was the only thing she bought?Goodness!  Well, she told me, because she was having a hard time choosing which to buy, she decided then to have her mom do the shopping for the necklace and that she was fascinated with the velvet jewelry display stand she just bought.

What???? Never again…

Sweet kisses in an empty box

Cousin Kevin received a parcel today intended as a special Mother’s day gift for her mom.  As he was excitedly checking on the contents, he told me that he shopped on line for the best gift ever which he is going to give my aunt . Soon after his passing the Board examination for Civil Engineers, he was able to secure for himself his very first job , last month after he received his first pay check, he chose to buy the first Grand Cayman jewelry gift especially for his Mom.  Cool… many “firsts”…

Oh well, I am starting to count for few more months and soon…hopefully soon I can present my much awaited college diploma to my Mom next year.  Since that special occasion comes every year, buying Cayman jewelry will be on my top list once I receive my first pay check too….

However, this coming Mother’s day, I will only blow sweet kisses in an empty box and when Mom opens it… she will surely feel my love for her.

Is this some kind of sibling rivalry?

I’ve  overheard my Auntie Liz excitedly bragging to my mom about her latest gold collection- 3 gold bangles that her hubby gifted her. Well, I am not surprised at all because my aunt really had good taste be it fashion, jewelries house decors… everything!  So she came to our house to show it to her sister (my mom).  When I caught glimpse of the gold, alright it is lovely but not enough to make my mother turned green in envy… lol…. Surprisingly, she just retaliated by telling Auntie Liz about her new purchase and how she learned to buy gold online.  She dashed inside her bedroom and came out too quick to show an intricately designed 21 K gold bracelet which she recently bought online.

Hey.. is this some kind of sibling rivalry….
