Outside the delivery room, I saw this seemingly nervous gentleman who kept pacing the corridor with long quick strides but with mixed emotions evident on his face. I just watched him from afar as I sat on the bench waiting to pick up and give a ride for a surgeon aunt who was stuck in the OR…..my mind wandered far on how is it to be a first time father? As I busily mused about such things, the OB-Gyne doctor emerged from the delivery room and I’ve overheard the announcement that it was a bouncing baby boy for the couple. He can’t contain his excitement and pulled out bills and asked where to buy avo cigars. Surprisingly, he was not prepared because it is a tradition for proud fathers to hand out cigars when a baby is born.
How did I come to know about that? 2 siblings came after me and I’ve seen my Dad gave away cigars after they were born. To date the tradition lives on but that man seemed to have forgotten all about it.
