Alarming news of two consecutive shooting incidents (dubbed as the Crime of Passion) happened in a known mall here and and it posed concern for shoppers and non- shoppers (those who come to the mall to cool them off- free Aircon) that somehow security is somehow blamed for being lax and which caused inconvenience and anxiety to customers fearing their safety might be jeopardized.
The latest incident involved two minors wherein a 13-year old boy shot his allegedly older male lover before turning the gun on himself. Investigation on the incident is still ongoing on how a .22 caliber firearm has been brought in undetected by the security personnels manning all entrances of the mall. This is the second of such incident when a jilted wife shot her husband who was working in the same mall but in another branch and it also caused the death of a security guard who was preventing her from killing herself.
It’s about time that sophisticated metal detectors be used in all establishments and public places to safeguard the lives of people. Though it is inconvenient to some to be scanned by hand held metal detectors but it will likely make people rest with the thought that there will be no deadly weapon floating around. We’ve seen walk through type metal detectors commonly used in airports and government buildings and it effectively deter the carrying of deadly weapons and finding weapons of those who try to carry it through. Sadly, there are security guards of some establishments who still use sticks to pry in bags and packages. It is not as reliable as with the use of metal detectors. Be it handheld or walk through metal detector as long as security measures are fully and strictly implemented to increase public safety, that is all matters.
Well, it is business as usual after the incident! Really, people love to shop!
