Frequent readers of my blog would know that weekends is also known as the days where my friends and I go out on an adventure. For two days, we ditch our work, go out and do something different. We go on hiking trips, we go visit different locations, go on a food trips and the like. Every week we try something new.
This week we got to see the insides of a mine. And not just any mine, but a gold mine.
The mine that we visited is the one of the few in the country that still stand and open for public viewing. Our group got a free pass thanks to Jenna, a dear friend of us who is works in the tourism industry (So if you’re wondering how we are able to afford frequent trips to different places every week, it’s because of her. Yep, it’s nice to have friends).
We got to the mine after a one hour trip from town. We parked our car at the foot of the mountain and started trekking a few stories upward. The entrance to the place was hidden behind towering rocks as if they were purposefully placed there by a possessive giant trying to hide the stash where he hides his bullion.
The mouth of the cave was littered with mining tools from the olden days. There were pickaxes, shovels, and mining hats. I’ve though they could have at least cleaned the place but concluded that they might be preserving the place as a tourist attraction. Or then again, maybe they are just props. Either way, they were really helpful in making you feel that you’ve come back in time.
I felt like Indy during his spelunking days
To tell you the truth, nothing prepared me for what I was about to see inside. I’ve seen a lot of pictures and have explored a lot of mines in video games but the real thing is breathtaking! I don’t know why. Granted that its dark and musty, but there was something about being inside a gold mine that was fascinating for me. This fascination was further escalated when we we were told that we will be heading to the room where the mined gold is stashed.
The thought of seeing a gold bullion up-front made me tingle with excitement. I even imagined myself swimming in it like what Scrooge McDuck of DuckTales always does in the cartoons. Unfortunately, I was quickly snapped back to reality when we were told that there’s no more gold anymore as the mine was already cleaned-out decades ago. Darn. I guess I can never be able to experience what a gazillion dollars would look like. Maybe I’ll would just go back to looking at pictures. Or, I could just buy gold bullion myself! If only I had the money, haha.
I was expecting to see more of the mine, unfortunately, the tour was short and quickly ended. We were told that going further is dangerous. Sigh. I was expecting to see bats, dwarves and orcs but it seems like it would have to do. It was a fun experience though!
Maybe we could visit a new place next time. The moon, perhaps?
