To console and convince a friend who is a confessed self hater because of her dark complexion is ain’t easy. We’ve tried that many times but Lyca’s mind would no longer accept reasons. But halleluia, Ms.Angola’s winning the coveted Ms. Universe 2011, only shows that indeed black is beautiful! And this stubborn friend of ours stopped for a while and I think she has shaken off her insecurities and was already back to her senses. She developed inferiority complex especially when she is with her circle of friends all of whom are white and fair skinned. And added to her woes or insecurities is the sorry fact that until now she has no boyfriend ever. She said she is a loser in this category. That’s why our convincing powers would not even move her to believe that beauty is only skin deep and if she would only continue to be beautiful inside, she will be a run away winner! She was very frustrated knowing that most people put so much weight on beauty and skin color and that made her hate herself.
Miss Angola evidently has no problems with her color, in fact she is confident and her victory over most fair skinned candidates from all over the world was an achievement she can be mighty proud of. This gave hope to my sulking friend that somehow she stood a chance. On our visit to her new place, she led us to her bathroom almost full of assorted whitening products; creams, lotions, soaps which she has been using religiously. Some products proved effective on her because there were days that we noticed some changes in her color but not permanently. Contentment is the key- if she will only adapt this attitude then for sure she won’t be spending a fortune just to be fair.
No more tears Lyca! Black is beautiful and that’s a fact! Miss Angola led by example and you should follow suit.
black beauty!
