If you are a frequent surfer of the interwebs, then you probably would have noticed the increasing popularity of Flash mobs this past few months.
To the uninitiated, like my mom, a Flash Mob is a term used to refer to a group of people who assemble in public place where there are many people and starts doing unusual acts for a short period and time, and then afterwards leaves like nothing happened.
It is dance flash mobs that are the most common lately. It usually goes like this: In a crowded place somewhere with lots of people, music suddenly starts playing and a single person starts to dance to the music. People start to watch as bystanders, but eventually, some of the bystanders start joining in to dance. This goes on until, a big number of people are now actually dancing in choreographed succession.
If you’re confused, here’s a sample video to illustrate things:
Aside from the dancers, I really find the reaction of other people amusing. Some just stood there in confusion, some enjoyed the scene and took pictures, while some even tried to go along and dance with the crowd.
But flash mobs are not just limited to just dancing, there are many other more, like group pillow fights, gun slinging, and even lightsaber fights.
Some of you may ask, what’s the point of these flash mobs? Well, flash mobs are a great way to attract attention, especially if its carefully executed. Some groups use this as a way to get attention to their causes. PR firms, on the other hand, are using this method to give exposure to products. Others just want to perform and give entertainment to other people.
So when someone starts dancing in the middle of park all of a sudden, don’t run off and call the police just yet, enjoy it for a few minutes and wait for other bystanders to join along. If this doesn’t happen, then go ahead and call the police.
